UNCERTAINTY AESTHETICS OOC RISOGRAPH & DESIGN EXHIBITION

數字,字母,色彩,圖像,這幾種在平面設計裡最常應用的元素,是這次展覽「不確定美學 OOC RISOGRAPH & DESIGN 展」的組合。兩位年青設計師洪家樂(Lok)及吳文政(Jinn)以數碼孔版油印(Risograph printing)這種印刷技術來進行創作,數碼孔版油印是一種以單色油墨疊印來完成的印刷技術,原理類似絲網印刷,粗網點、顏色鮮亮的特性及疊印錯位的印刷效果。作為平面設計師,對印刷成品要求精準接近預期是習慣,亦是基本的要求,而Riso-printing正正是違反這種定義,甚至乎主張遵守這份不確定性。

 

我們日常生活有一個規律,而在常規中有無限的不確定,同一個時間點,可以延伸無限個可能性,當然這刻的我是進入了其中一條路線,所以,你與我在此相遇。Lok的作品《D for Distance》以時間為內容,再介入點與點路程中拍下的壓縮影像,這些他經常會走的路,因為中間會遇到不同的事,而改變時間及影像,每天一樣的路,每一天都遇見不同的人。《R for Random》上有CNY853字樣的色卡在海報上隨機散落,Lok的概念是來自新年時放鞭炮,它爆發散落時的形態,每一次都不同,這種隨機造就的美態,與規律成對立,也是最容易從日常生活中找到樂事的點子。

 

除了視覺可看到的觀感外,一些透過自然現象或五感中的其它觸感,隨處都是不確定性,甚至乎一切必定存在不確定。Jinn的作品更深層的思考這個問題,《∅ for Gemini》是指雙胞胎的相似之中微妙的不同之處,圖案以兩個圓的融合或散開來表達,兩面一體的解說,呈現相同之中的不同。Jinn的作品《Coda》以英文和弦來表達節奏,對他來說音樂在數碼版本中本來是最完美的基準,正因如此演出者也會按照其基準,而在演出中表現出來,但其實很多時候現場現唱的變化也會隨著場地及機材的不同,而產生不確定的觀感給觀眾,甚至是演出者本身的力道與情緒,這種不確定因素正正是帶給觀眾不可預測的魅力所在。產生出來的視覺影像存在無限種變化,當中各種美並不能互相比較,因為各自有可取之處。

 

洪家樂及吳文政以OCC之名為RISOGRAPH創作團隊以外,再延到實驗產品,《O for OOClock》是Lok與Kamwa@Mo42Lab合作的生活美學產品,它可以自己倒模成型,在乾透期間任意按壓成不同的形狀,貫徹不確定性在各種物品上的可能性。承OCC所言,自然而然的不確定,是代表現今新世代對生活的一種想法、勇氣及渴求,也是創作人不斷的自我要求及實驗過程,來創作更多的與別不同,以個性化代替批量生產及公式化人生。

Numbers, letters, colors, images – these commonly used graphic design elements are the building blocks of the Aesthetics of Uncertainty – OOC Risograph & Design Exhibition. Two young designers Lok Hong and Jinn Ng create using the Risograph printing technique. Risograph is a kind of monochromatic multilayer digital printing technique similar to screen printing, characterized by large dot size, bright colors and the printing effects of layer misalignment. It is often a graphic designer’s habit, or even basic requirement, to strive for precision and make the final printed product as close to as expected. Riso printing, however, goes against this idea, to the point that it almost promotes uncertainty.

 

Our daily lives have a regular pattern, but within the regularity lies infinite uncertainty, with infinite possibilities existing at each moment in time. At this moment, I am already on one of those possible paths that have led us to meet here. Themed on time, Lok's work D for Distance uses compressed images of photos taken point-by-point on roads he often walks. He encounters different things on the way at different times, thus changing the timeframe and the images; every day he walks the same road but meets different people. R for Random has the color card with the text 'CNY853' scattered randomly on the poster. Lok's concept for this came from setting off fireworks during Chinese New Year – each firework explosion creates a different scattered shape, which is beauty created in a random way as opposed to regularity. In our daily lives, random beauty is the easiest joy.

 

Not just limited to what we see, uncertainty is also found through natural phenomena and the other senses. Uncertainty exists everywhere and in everything. Jinn's work ponders these issues on a deeper level. ∅ for Gemini examines the subtle differences in the likeness of twins. His design uses the merging and separation of two circles to express how two sides of one body break free from each other, exhibiting the differences within similarities. Jinn's work Coda uses English chords to express rhythm. To him, music in its digital form is the ideal standard, and therefore musicians follow that standard when performing live. However, live performances often are conditioned by differences in setting and equipment, producing uncertain differences in each audience’s experience. Even the power and emotion of the performer are variables that add unpredictable charm. Infinite kinds of changes exist in the visual image produced, within which lie various beauties that each have their own merits and cannot be compared.

 

Besides forming a Risograph creation team called OCC, Lok and Jinn also try creating experimental products. Lok cooperated with Kamwa@Mo42Lab to make O for OOClock, an everyday aesthetics product that people can mold themselves. It can be pressed into different shapes when dry, thus creating more possibilities out of the uncertainty inherent to all objects. As OCC says, natural uncertainty represents a kind of idea, bravery, and yearning of today's generation towards life. It is also a creator's continuous process of self-doubt and experimentation to create more uniqueness and individuality in our lives dominated by the mass production and stereotypes.

洪家樂 Lok Hong


平面設計師,策展人,1990年生於澳門,2016年於倫敦藝術大學品牌設計系碩士學位畢業。澳門設計師協會副理事長,澳門設計雙年展籌委會主席,澳門理工學院設計課程客席講師,曾任職於澳門美高梅高級平面設計師、2018年創辦LOKSOPHY DESIGN LTD. 兼任設計總監。設計範疇包括品牌設計,活動形象,包裝設計,出版物設計等。過去作品獲全國及國際性獎項30多項,並曾於波蘭,韓國,台灣,泰國,中國等地展出,部份作品輯錄於國際平面設計雜誌ldN,CTA亞洲創意對話,香港明報周刊等雜誌、書籍中。


A graphic designer, curator. Lok was born in Macau in 1990. He graduated with a MA in Graphic Branding and Identity from the University of the Arts in London in 2016.
Lok is Vice Chairman of the Macau Designers Association, Chairman of the Preparatory Committee for the Macau Design Biennale, and guest lecturer for the design courses at the Macao Polytechnic Institute. He worked as a senior graphic designer at MGM Macau, and he founded LOKSOPHY DESIGN LTD. in 2018, serving as its design director also.
He works in the fields of branding design, event image, packaging design, to publication design. He has won more than 30 national and international awards, and has exhibited in Poland, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, China, etc. Some of his works are published in international graphic design magazines such as ldN, CTA-Creative Talk in Asia, Hong Kong’s Ming Pao Weekly, as well as other publications.

吳文政 Jinn Ng


平面設計師,插畫家,1987年生於澳門,2014年倫敦藝術大學品牌設計系碩士學位畢業。澳門字體學會副會長,澳門理工學院數碼插畫兼職講師。2009年以Knightmare Design名義參與多項合作,日本音樂廠牌Space Shower Music旗下樂團唱片包裝設計主要擔當,設計範疇包括多項唱片包裝設計,品牌與活動形象,書籍出版等。曾獲選第八屆澳門設計雙年展公開組銀奬,插畫作品曾於倫敦當地展出,2015年獲選日本TDC年鑑掲載。


Born in Macau in 1987, Jinn is a graphic designer, illustrator. He graduated with a MA in Graphic Branding and Identity from the University of the Arts in London in 2014.
Jinn is the Vice President of the Macao Type Design Society, part-time lecturer of Digital Illustration at the Macao Polytechnic Institute. Since 2009, he has participated in a number of projects in the name of Knightmare Design. He was main designer on packaging design for records of ensembles of Japanese music label Space Shower Music. Jinn works across the fields of record packaging design, branding and event image, book design, ect. He was awarded a Silver Prize (Open Category) at the 8th Macau Design Biennale. His illustrations were exhibited in London and his work was selected and included in the 2015 Tokyo TDC (Tokyo Type Directors Club) Yearbook.

OOC is the first studio in Macau to combine design services with Risograph, playing the role as a market explorer in the city. By sharing with the public the fun of Risograph printing and its advantages in commercial uses, the studio hopes to encourage people to create their own aesthetics of life through Riso-printing.
