Weeks after Assassin’s Creed Valhalla proposed that Norwich in the dark ages was an ideal place to pass the time during a global pandemic, Ubisoft is back with a much sunnier escapade in Greek mythology. Immortals Fenyx Rising may sound like a chewed-up heavy metal tape your dad found at a car boot sale, but it’s actually a charming open-world adventure where you bounce around the heavens solving problems for the gods.
Immortals Fenyx Rising may not perfectly match the organic exploration of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but it more than makes up for its shortcomings with gorgeous design, a witty script, and excellent combat.
As Fenyx progresses, Immortals fulfills a terrific power fantasy. At first, the combat system emphasizes basic attacks, parries, and dodges, but that run-of-the-mill repertoire quickly builds to one that allows you to chain together awesome, godlike powers. You can command your bird companion to rain death from above while you summon a cluster of spears from beneath the ground, then finish the combo with a devastating swing of a giant hammer. Immortals consistently delivers stylish action that encourages you to build your combos and optimize your gear to suit your playstyle. Unfortunately, the enemy types get repetitive; by the end of the journey, I was tired of battling the usual cyclopes and griffins, which is why I actively sought out the unique optional bosses.
One area that Immortals has completely made its own is its combat system. Fenyx is equipped with three core weapons: a sword, an axe, and a bow. They do mostly what you think they’d do, but what makes it work so well is how tightly it all blends together. Dashing and parrying plays a big part, with frame perfect utilisation resulting in bullet-time gameplay, allowing you to connect extra hits. The axe, as well as being more destructive, builds up a stun bar that, when full, will knock your enemy out for a brief time. Your bow can be utilised for quick shots in between, and a special ability allows you to control the trajectory of an arrow manually for strategic targeting. A proper stealth mechanic is employed, allowing you to execute critical attack damage from the shadows. Rocks, much like in BOTW, can be lifted and launched, but in Immortals this feels a much more responsive system. What’s key is that battles always feel winnable, even against vastly tougher opponents – if you can master the mechanics, all supported by a terrific amount of skill tree customisation, allowing you to unlock new combat and passive abilities.
Immortals Fenyx Rising injects both the best and worst aspects of Ubisoft open-world games into the DNA of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. While the shortcomings can occasionally get in the way of its enjoyment, the game is so vast and colorful that the more I played, the more I forgave those flaws. Ubisoft has a fantastic new franchise on its hands that feels tonally unique and will undoubtedly get better with future installments.
