Bendy and the Dark Revival does right by its predecessor, allowing you to embark on a haunting journey through a mesmerizing world.
Similar to horror game franchises Poppy Playtime and Five Nights at Freddy's, Bendy and the Dark Revival tells the story of Audrey, an animator working late who finds herself within a strange, twisted version of the now-defunct Joey Drew Studios. The ink-filled labyrinth is populated by a variety of creatures, including the infamous ink demon Bendy, a malformed, malevolent version of his cheery cartoon counterpart. Partially transformed by the ink, Audrey must navigate the treacherous, dilapidated studio in search of an exit. Audrey's ink-infested state allows her to acquire new abilities, and throughout her journey, she makes allies and discovers shocking truths about her past.
The first thing I noticed this time was how similar it felt to BioShock. Now, this isn’t a bad thing; I loved all three BioShock games. Your first (and only, more on that later) weapon is a pipe similar to the wrench. The mission objective pop-ups look very similar. We have a man brought to god-like status in his own world (Andrew Ryan & Joey Drew). The ink puddles are everywhere, identical to the leaking water of Rapture.
The stunning visuals in Bendy and the Dark Revival match perfectly with the game’s top-notch sound design. Although Audrey is a character who rarely appears in the game, her design is absolutely gorgeous. Partially claimed by ink, his glowing eyes and sole black limbs give him an ethereal, ghostly appearance.
Bendy and the Dark Revival's graphics are also gorgeous, complementing its excellent audio design. Although Audrey is a character who hardly appears in the game, her design is absolutely gorgeous. Partially claimed by the ink, her glowing eyes and sole black limb give her an ethereal, haunting appearance. The once-grand studio Audrey explores is a crumbling, dilapidated mess oozing with glistening ink. The Dark Revival offers players the opportunity to explore various locations, including a dim city street, an eerie laboratory, and an inky sewer system adorned with odd flora. Animations of Audrey using her abilities, succumbing to enemies, and interacting with her environment feel natural.
New weapons or a more in-depth combat system would’ve made this game more fun. Stealth is a bit different, allowing Audrey to stealth banish unalerted foes back to the ink they were born from. The last boss fight was a bit more fun this time than in the original Bendy. So points where it’s due that time around.
Bendy and the Dark Revival is a wonderful return to the series' original style! While the scares were rather mild, the art style, story, and overall experience are easy to consider entertaining and well done. If you are a horror fan and haven’t played the Bendy series yet, then this game should be your sign to get on it. While the games aren’t very long, they are definitely one to remember.
